About Section 9

AI for Social Good

Section 9 is a pioneering AI for Social Good research group based in the Caribbean, established in February 2021. Our mission is to advance the responsible use of artificial intelligence to address some of the region’s most pressing social and economic challenges.

Funded through a combination of government research grants, AWS technology grants, and private sector partnerships, Section 9 operates as a multidisciplinary research lab bringing together scientists, technologists, and policy experts.

We work in close collaboration with the University of the West Indies, UCC, UTech, the 14West AI Fund, and Orbital Brand Science, leveraging shared expertise in machine learning, data science, behavioural analytics, and digital transformation.

Our portfolio spans initiatives in education access, public safety, election awareness, climate resilience, and other areas where data and AI can drive measurable social impact. By developing and deploying ethically grounded AI systems, Section 9 aims to build a sustainable framework for innovation that strengthens institutions, empowers citizens, and informs evidence-based policy across the Caribbean and beyond.

Our Vision

Section 9 is more than a research group; it is a movement. We are building a model for how small nations and global partners can collaborate to make AI a force for good, testing, refining, and scaling solutions that others can learn from and adopt.

By combining local insight with global expertise, we aim to prove that the Caribbean can lead in shaping the ethical and practical use of AI.

Mission Log
Our name is inspired by Ghost in the Shell, the iconic cyberpunk story where Section 9 is an elite unit tasked with handling the most complex and sensitive challenges in a rapidly evolving technological world. Just as the fictional Section 9 navigated the intersection of humanity, society, and advanced systems, our Section 9 seeks to harness AI responsibly to serve people first.
